LA Times talks to Neil Patrick Harris

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Neil Patrick Harris shares how he became involved with Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

He called me. I was in New York, and he called me to ask if I wanted to work with him on — and I just said yes. Joss, Jed and Zach. And Maurissa! Jed’s girlfriend! The four of them, they wrote these songs. Joss described it best: a low-rent supervillain. And his aspirations to become more powerful in the supervillain hierarchy. And there’s nine songs in it! They’re going to air it on the Internet!

…I peruse the Internet with great frequency. I think the Internet short, the Internet movie, is turning a corner. They are seeing they can make it more clever than just five or six friends with a camera putting it on YouTube.

Maybe the strike was responsible for that. I’m a huge Joss fan! And have been dying, literally dying to work with him.

Site of the Week - DoctorHorrible.net

Sci Fi Scanner has nominated Doctorhorrible.net as the site of the week in a recent blog.

Though there’s been little news about the web series, we do know that it will be 10, three-minute-long episodes, and stars Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), and Felicia Day (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). In fact, it was the last who made the website “official.”

“At one point Felicia Day referred to doctorhorrible.net as the ‘official’ fan site in her blog, and later that same day, one of the [series'] writers said to me, ‘You are officially the official fan site,’” said the site’s administrator. “That was enough confirmation for me.”

There’s no set release date for Whedon’s musical web series yet. But as the time for it’s arrival draws near, and whenever there is news, DoctorHorrible.net will be there. “I have a couple of people helping to keep up with the buzz and contributing to the site’s content,” said the owner. “We’d also like to think that there will end up being more than just three 10-minute episodes, or another new series to follow, so who knows what the possibilities are.”

The FlickFilosopher is Intrigued

There might not be any more news to report but Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is still getting attention:

I’m intrigued by Doctor Horrible not just as a fan of Whedon and Fillion but as a watcher of how the Net is changing how entertainment is produced and distributed. The established TV networks and film studios appear to be terrified of the Web’s potential — and I think it’ll be up to creative types like Whedon to show them the possibilities… while cutting them out of the action at the same time.

Why Technology & Doctor Horrible are Important to Joss

In an interesting article about Hollywood’s transmedia gurus, David Kushner has the following to say about Joss and Doctor Horrible:

“Whedon is now experimenting with properties that originate online as short video series or Web serials. Part of the incentive is the creative freedom and low production costs. At the moment, he is creating a three-part, 30-minute serial about a hapless villain, called “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” which he plans to make available for free online. If that show gets picked up in another medium, Whedon will own a greater stake than if the show originated on network television. ”
