Liked the story. The end wasn’t what I expected. But what’s the point of watching if you can predict everything in advance, especially the ending?
Besides, I could say that I liked the ending, but more in this fashion:
shock > long reflection > “hm, that could work” > “totally awesome ending, couldn’t have it any other way”…
P.S. My favorite is still Act 2… this one can’t be matched.
July 20th, 2008 at 4:12 amI don’t understand why anyone would be “disappointed”. Not only is Joss well known for this sort of thing – ie surprise and characters in jeopardy – see Serenity! – but surely they should be happy that the ending opens up the possibility of future developments. Now we have a real anti-hero who has some depth and you couldn’t have that with a neatly tied up TV sitcom kind of ending. For me the end sent shivers down my spine which you really wouldn’t get with a standard kind of spoof. Now I’m hungry for more!
Thank you Joss! …and now…off to get my T-shirt!
July 20th, 2008 at 10:52 amThe ending was terrible, and beautiful, and sad… and perfect. I hated it, cursed Joss for it… and yet realised that it really kind of had to end that way.
As someone said in another comment, it perfectly establishes the character of Dr. Horrible as a “real anti-hero who has some kind of depth” (while at the same time showing what kind of “hero” Captain Hammer really was).
And that final shot of Dr. Horrible, with him sitting in front of his web-cam, singing the last line of the last song: “and I won’t feel… a thing”… Wow, just… wow.
July 20th, 2008 at 1:13 pmI agree. The end was totally Joss, and anyone who knows his work shouldn’t be surprised, only awed by the greatness that he and the gang sank into the production off the fly. If you need your happy ending fix, join the fan fiction groups on the internet, I am certain people will be writing their own versions where Penny lives happily ever after with her true love, who ever that might be in YOUR head. Maybe we could introduce her to Spike, too.
July 20th, 2008 at 1:44 pmI totally loved all three acts. Anyone familar with my masters (aka Joss Whedon’s) work would know better than to “expect” anything. That’s what makes Joss so wonderful. Act two is still my favourite. However, I love that this ending totally sets up for the possibility of further story development. Joss rocks! I can’t wait for group showings so we can all sing a long. My neighbors probably will be excited about that too!lol.
July 20th, 2008 at 5:02 pmOf course no one wanted to see Penny die, that’s what makes good storytelling. We developed an emotional attachment to these characters quickly because the story was done so well. Shows that invoke this kind of feeling are the ones we remember most.
This also gives a strong reason for Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer to continue being rivals. Each of them is going to blame the other for her death.
July 20th, 2008 at 8:48 pmYup, I loved every second of each act(including the end)but there’s more to this endeavour. This could be the start of something big. Imagine the potential for seeing scripts that would otherwise be left forever unseen(probably at the bottom of a pile on a Fox exec’s desk). Sure there will be a lot of turkeys if the format proves viable, but it will be down to the viewer to support a show they like. As for Dr Horrible, I’m definately gonna buy the t-shirt(and a dvd).
