Hello everyone,

as I am working in the german music industry, I just spoke with my friend at I-Tunes Germany. He hadn´t heard about the whole project at all so far nor from his US colleagues about it.

I sent him the hulu-link, he watched it and loved it (how could he resist 😉

He will get in contact with his colleagues from US I-tunes now to see, if they can make it available for Germany. He said, Gemany would make it available, but its up to the US to o.k. it.

As soon as he has heard back from them, he will let me know.

Keep you all posted.

Cheers

Beate

Surprised they haven't even heard about it, but even more surprised by the eagerness to get things rolling. Independent on how it turns out, a big thank you to him and you ,-)

Hi there. thanx for your nice reply.

over here, Dr. Horrible is not so known by many people, it was only a mouth to mouth thing.

You know, - if something is SO good, you HAVE to support it. Specially as for the first time in the entertainment business, people feel, if they team up, they can acutally change something.

I am huge FIREFY fan since quite some time and I have written so many emails to the german TV station RTL that holds the rights for the series, never showed it. But finally a few weeks ago they showed Serenity for the first time. I know there were other german browncoats who did the same, maybe it all helped...

As I work in the german music industry since over 20 years, I have seen so much shit to be released for no reason just based on company policies. The music industry still thinks they have the controll over the audience not recognizing that people are fed up already.

So for me, managing a band, the whole Dr. Horrible release was a true inspiration doing it all ourselves, turning down all offers from major record companies for the band so far... Its a risk, but if you don´t try it, you´ll never know.

I believe change is good, even if its scary as hell...

I really hope we can make I-tunes Germany move 😉

Ciao

Beate

I know. I tried to get a few people to watch it, even translated it and created English and German subtitles just to expand the potential \"viewership\" (timing the subs with the dialogue was tedious and it doesn't work too well with the usually longer German subs.. unless you're a fast reader). Don't think I had any success so far.

But finally a few weeks ago they showed Serenity for the first time. I know there were other german browncoats who did the same, maybe it all helped…

Unfortunately the time slot wasn't that great. Even a week before they aired it I was somewhat expecting them to say \"Show Firefly? After the lousy ratings for Serenity? No way.\" (it's Fox all over again)

The music industry still thinks they have the controll over the audience not recognizing that people are fed up already.

As they so appropriately said in one of the GTA games: \"We tell you what's good... and then play it until you like it.\"

wow, so you also took great lenghs to get more people into it. Horray for your efforts, thats great. So do you live in germany, where about. I am from Berlin?

I was more lucky, since most of my friends are working eather in the music, advertising or fashion business, they all speak english pretty well and immediately got the humour. \"The hammer is my penis\", did the trick for them...

I also got them to watch FIREFLY and they became addicted, like me...

The german language is so different from the english and so is the amount of humour the average german understands or can take 😉

The dubbing on House, Weeds, The Tudors is quite good, but Queer as Folk, they destroyed completely. The other tv series I love the most besides FIREFLY.

Reg. Serenity, again like FOX, they didn´t properly advertise it nor did they tell people the story why Serenity is existing. Forget about german tv, it sucks. I mostly stopped watching german TV 2 years ago, besides Football, Neues aus der Anstalt and ARTE, there is nothing that interests me anymore.

I watch all tv series (Pushing Daisies, House, Weeds, Californication, How I met your mother etc.) online. I would also pay for them, but they´re not available. So I watch the streams for free. I am not a person that expects to get art for free, especially since I´m working in the music industry thats suffering big time from illegal downloading. Industry lost 40% of the income because of the downloading.

About the music industry, you´ve got it exactly right, thats their biggest problem. But things are changing, since my space and facebook came up, more and more bands are trying to keep the power in their own hands, without the record companies.

Thats why I was so inspired by Dr. Horrible and I´m trying to go a similar way, keeping in mind of course our fanbase is much much much smaller, but ya need to start somewhere...

I think if we all understand we are on the same boot, we can change things for better entertainment in the future.

I know there have been plans by some dedicated FIREFLY fans for quite some time now, to get the rights and do the show only for the internet... if Joss WHedon would be on board of course. Dr. Horrible proved what could be a modell for the future.

Keep fingers crossed

Not really an effort. Two weeks of vacation and glad I found something to keep myself busy with (wanted to spend the time programming.. how sad is it to plan doing the same thing during vacation that you do at work?). Did the same with Firefly and less than an hour after finishing the last episode they announced the German DVD set (after RTL basically said \"no interest in airing, ergo no interesting in having it dubbed\").

Anyway. I'm close to Munich. And thinking about retiming the subs to fix the overlap issues (turned out only Media Player Classic can automatically place them correctly, so technically I'd have to combine the overlapping parts in a very hackish way).

I was more lucky, since most of my friends are working eather in the music, advertising or fashion business, they all speak english pretty well and immediately got the humour. “The hammer is my penis”, did the trick for them…

I guess they would get that one, too. They probably wouldn't have much of a problem with written English. Downside of school English is that you mostly read it, but hardly ever get to hear it.

I also got them to watch FIREFLY and they became addicted, like me…

Also failed there. I tried, but all I could do was make them watch Serenity. Which was dubbed, so... maybe more luck with the German FF set (though the quality varies quite a bit, some episodes are pretty well done, others are pretty depressing).

I watch all tv series (Pushing Daisies, House, Weeds, Californication, How I met your mother etc.) online. I would also pay for them, but they´re not available. So I watch the streams for free.

Sounds familiar. Some shows never get aired and when they do it takes forever. And I'm not a fan of dubbing. Too much lost in translation, especially since it needs to \"look\" right (often making the \"correct\" translation impossible to use).

I know there have been plans by some dedicated FIREFLY fans for quite some time now, to get the rights and do the show only for the internet… if Joss WHedon would be on board of course.

Guess I'm a sceptic there. Considering that Dr Horrible was non-spacey and still low six figures for essentially one episode, the fans would have to be _very_ dedicated. Not that I'd mind investing a largish amount (for a single average Joe) into a Joss-project. I could see myself chipping in up to $100 for a DH sequel if it included the final product on DVD.

You must really love working with computers spending your holidays indoors 😉

It amuses me every time when I see that tv-stations and movie companies make the same mistakes as the music industry. Instead of learning from their defeat... egos, its all about egos...

Not to mention those horrible copies of sucessfull US or Uk series, Stromberg is the only good example how to do it right in my opinion.

I bought several copies of the FIREFLY DVD Box and gave them as presents to my friends. I suggested they should watch \"Our Mr. Reynalds\" first, followed by \"Trash\", - all I can say is \"Yap, that went well\". And I mailed the links to the wikipedia side with all quotes. - I also told them the whole story behind it, about the browncoats, I think they got intrigued - it worked...

Reg. getting enough people together for a series on the net, I think it would work. I read on another page that every episode of Firefly was about aprox. 1 Mio (productioncosts), if we have 100.000 people paying only 10$ on a subscription basis we are set. And Dr. Horrible proved that the fanbase is way bigger than 100.000 people. I think the big difference is, with Joss Whedon you can be sure, whatever his crazy mind comes up with its always smart, unsual, heartfelt, exciting AND entertaining. So no risk in spending some money in my opinion.

Well, they have the benefit of always doing exactly what I tell them. Though often not what I want. But as someone has said \"Programs are always behaving exactly as expected. Unless your expectations are wrong.\"

Which is I would be a little more generous and pay in advance. On the other hand, it's the same for movies. The only way to find out if it deserves your financial support is to pay in advance. You can't say \"this movie sucked, I want my money back to keep them from producing even more crap like that\". In a way it's more about tricking people into watching than actually delivering something worth watching. Not giving press screenings until after release seems to be the most common trick. Pretty much the exact opposite of Dr. Horrible.

Do not worry, you are not alone. 😉

Some German blog writers also advertised for Dr. Horrible as the single acts came out, e.g. we did that on our comic website.

Each day I am clicking on the \"Download on iTunes\" button (to receive a note stating that \"the article is not available at the moment in the German store\") hoping that the iTunes people in Germany notice a demand for Dr. Horrible.

But obviously, it'll be more effective to tell those people directly. So thanks! Maybe it will help. 🙂
