Official Merchandise
If you’re a fan of Dr Horrible, no doubt you’d love your very own Dr Horrible shirt - these are available at J!nx and new designs will be added soon!
If you see shirts being offered at cafepress or elsewhere, you need to be aware that these are NOT official items and are not endorsed by the Dr Horrible team.
Support those that gave us Dr Horrible and visit J!nx for your shirt!
Official Dr Horrible shirts …. tell your friends!
A word from the official Dr Horrible Twitter:
Do NOT order Dr. Horrible merch from cafepress.com. We weren’t not aware of the merch and have nothing to do wit it. J!nx.com please.

cafepress has terrible quality stuff, too. Stick with J!nx!

July 31st, 2008 at 10:44 pmAre they moving to crack down just on the designs they’re selling officially, or on anything and everything related to Dr. Horrible?

July 31st, 2008 at 11:16 pmThe latest twitter from Doctor Horrible says “Taking care of the cafepress.com situation. And yes, new merch on jinx is on it’s way. Thank you! ” so that kind of gives me the impression that they’re putting in a complaint against cafepress stores selling stuff based on their product, but I haven’t got a clue….. anyone else know? Personally I wouldn’t blame them - they ARE trying to make back enough money to pay everyone for creating this and that’s fair enough.

July 31st, 2008 at 11:29 pmTo be fair, some of the designs on cafepress are hilarious. Also to be fair, the money should be going to various Whedons, et al. I’m waiting for new official J!nx material to supplement my official Hamshirt.
Some designs I would probably invest in: “status is not quo”, Australia, Wonderflonium, “crazy, random happenstance”, and maybe an official ELE logo.

August 1st, 2008 at 5:44 am1) The range of Jinx merch is, IMHO, just not very good (yet)compared with the unofficial merch. Happy to buy Jinx as long as there is something I would actually wear. But I love my CafePress Bad Horse tee.
2) I would welcome any retailer, including Jinx, selling through non-US distributors, as the shipping costs of ordering from the US are so high.
3) Could we buy from other stores, thus ensuring consumer choice, and then just make a donation to a Dr Horrible fund??

August 1st, 2008 at 11:50 amDoes anyone know who/where specifically to contact if we want licensing information?
I have some designs that I spent a lot of time working on, and they’ve been well received. I was selling them, as they’re not duplicating any official merch (and I bought my official shirts from J!nx too) but I’m taking them down now.
But I’d really like to see if I can’t make them officially licensed products. I did a search for Mutant Enemy but didn’t come up with any real contact info - and I have no knowledge of ‘the biz’ at all, so any direction would be appreciated if anyone has a clue.

August 1st, 2008 at 12:03 pmI think Joss has to be very careful with this kind of action. Some of the designs were clearly rip-offs of the Jinx shirts, but others were just fan appreciation. Appreciation that would be walking advertising for the show and create, virally, new fans. He obviously had a change of heart when he reposted the videos to hulu.com. I hope he has a change of heart with this too.
He should maybe look at the stitch ‘n bitch debacle from a couple years ago… the company that shut down dozens of cafepress stores by crying “trademark infringement” did irreparable damage to their reputation worldwide, both with their current and with their future customers. In greedily trying to make money off the trademark, they ensured that they will *never* make money from the trademark.
To the Whedons: take a page from pioneers like Jonathan Coulton and embrace fan merch and mash-ups. It’s all good. Really.

August 1st, 2008 at 12:19 pmI think they have every right to protect their copyrighted work - fans or not, they’re breaching copyright and isn’t it a regulation of cafepress (making an assumption here as it applies to most places) that they not use copyrighted works in their designs? The Dr Horrible team worked really hard to give us something fun and entertaining and as far as my personal opinion goes - they deserve to be paid for their work - and so long as they’re selling official shrits, people should respect that instead of trying to make money for their own pockets based on someone else’s creation. If people want to be a walking promotion for the show, they should buy an official shirt - that way everybody’s happy. And if people don’t like the current designs, then ask the team for more - clearly they have listened to fans and are already working on some more designs.

August 1st, 2008 at 3:50 pmI just found the “musical” and love it. Watched it twice today thus far. I would totally order a shirt from J!nx but imho the designs they’ve come up with thus far are completely LAME. The designs on cafepress.com are desigsn that I and my friends are SO much more likely to buy….but being as how they are rip offs and supposedly of poor quality, I’ll wait until the offical makers get a move on and make cooler, more “with it” designs…..but I can’t promise I’ll wait for very long….

August 1st, 2008 at 4:54 pmCount me in as being all in favor of the official merchandise seller getting our business, but wanting them to deserve our business by offering what we want, i.e., creative, attractive stuff. That was the problem w/Serenity; prior to the movie’s release, the studios had little or no merchandise, and what they had was lame. Fans rushed in to fill the gap, created some fabulous t-shirts etc. Then once the movie released, there was some official stuff, but still nowhere as near worth buying as the fan-made stuff. We’re loyal, but we don’t like being stuck with 2nd-best designs when there’s better ideas out there.

August 1st, 2008 at 5:43 pmThose b@stards!
How DARE they underestimate the fervor surrounding their project!
First, they screwed us by not picking a large enough server to handle the bandwidth which we promptly shut down. THEN, they screwed us by not taking into account international users. Next, they screwed us by not getting things sorted out with iTunes properly, locally and internationally. Now, they’re screwing us by only having available for purchase the t-shirt designs they had already prepared for the show (i.e. OFFICIAL shirts worn by cast and crew). DAMN THEM! Be still the hatred within my soul!
Seriously… it’s not a conspiracy. This is a small group of folks who are busting their asses right now to meet the demand of an unexpected number of fans. While I’m sure they appreciate the interest in fan-made memorabilia, they still have a copyrighted work to protect. There are only so many hours in a day, folks. They can’t possibly be expected to have thought up every incarnation or style of t-shirt that the public might want. Seeing as how two weeks ago, the public didn’t WANT anything. Those that are playing the greed thought in their minds, I think your feelings are just hurt right now. They snatched the $1.50 a t-shirt you were probably making in bootleg merchandise away from you. It would hurt my feelings also, but I think you’ll come around. Or are you gonna go all vengeful and start picketing Joss’ evil business practices now?
/end sarcasm
ETA: This post was a little snarkier than planned, but I stand by it.

August 2nd, 2008 at 2:12 amI see that now Joss’s lawyers have reached out to cafepress and all the merc is gone from there. Everything set to pending status. How do people feel about that. I for one am a little surprised.

August 2nd, 2008 at 7:27 pmWhat about dr. horrible and captain hammer fan girl tank tops!?!? I want one of those - but all you are offering are the tshirts

August 3rd, 2008 at 12:11 amI’d have no problem with ordering from the official site - IF the women’s shirts came in a size large enough for me.
Their ‘2XL’ is 19″ wide - that’s only a 38. I demand justice for larger-boobed Dr Horrible fans!

August 4th, 2008 at 10:54 amThis is an important topic. For anyone who is interested, a thread which fleshes out this topic even more is over on WHEDONesque. A very good read:
http://whedonesque.com/comments/17179
Joss & Co. have every right to protect their intellectual property… especially in the case of Dr. Horrible as they are working to develop a financially sound business model so they can make even more cool online productions. Bootleg merchandise, which duplicate the same type of official merchandise (like t-shirts), can siphon money away from the intellectual property owner. That makes it much harder to make a project like Dr. Horrible a viable, profitable venture.
Fans have a lot of enthusiasm, and many come up with great ideas and designs. Perhaps a way can be arranged for fans to participate in designing officially sanctioned merchandise in a shared profit arrangement with Mutant Enemy. This arrangement could end up being a part of this new business model being explored. However, such an arrangement needs to be done with the full approval and control of Mutant Enemy.
Also, if the officially licensed t-shirts lack the selection one would like to see, then by all means send J!nx some suggestions for designs.
Oh, on a side note, Cafe Press merchandise is very good. They’re always working on new and improved ways to print t-shirts and the quality now is much better than in the past. (A good thing to keep in mind if an officially sanctioned “Dr. Horrible” Cafe Press portal ends up to be a doable fan participation arrangement.)

August 5th, 2008 at 2:20 amGreat post, 11th! Great to see you over here.
And for folks that don’t know, 11th is the resident martyr for the Firefly/Cafe Press snafu from a ways back. So if anyone is gonna know the situation or understand all of this, she’s your girl.
11th, I like your suggestions, and I do hope that Mutant Enemy can figure out a licensing arrangement for those folks that want to make their own products. I personally would like to have my own OFFICIAL “The Status is NOT Quo” t-shirt.

August 11th, 2008 at 12:19 pmOk, Seriously I just want to watch the show. I live in Canada and want to buy it on DVD.

August 20th, 2008 at 4:03 pmyes pls more merch! I want to get my hubby a C.H. t shirt, but the larges and XLs are all sold out. I want to support the real DR.H crew and not bootleggers. They need to put out more cool stuff for us fans to buy!! Dolls! more tees!! MUGS!
I am an artist and want to design a Dr.H vs C.H. tee, but I don’t want to violate any copyright laws or upset the people I am trying to support. I wonder, is there a way to submit a design to the powers that be so they can use it if they like it?

August 22nd, 2008 at 1:06 amI’d be happy if Jinx would hurry up and make some more Dr. Horrible Face shirts available..Every color and size is sold out..And I agree with others in that the quote ones are okay, I’d still like for them to be more than they are..Am going to order a “I’m not your Nemesis” shirt sometime today while they’re still available..
Moze.

October 29th, 2008 at 2:39 pmi prefer to order official merchandise.
but you know what, according to the notes folks have left on jinx own site, they’ve been out of the dr horrible fanshirts for 85 days. i wanted to order one for my best girlfriend for halloween. now i can’t even get it for her birthday. and as to christmas…; if it’s been so many months without restock at jinx, i can’t plan on it.
frankly, jinx’ selection is not very good, the styles of shirts are unflattering for women’s figures, and they’re out of stock on the stuff i want.
i WANT to support whedon and get an official shirt. but even if i found one i fancied they’re out of stock!!!
it’s sort of forcing us to go through other means, isn’t it?
