First of all, howdy, folks! I only just recently watched DH for the first time. Also, 'tis my first post here. =)
Anyway… Dunno if it's already been discussed, but I consider the line "arise and sing" to be extremely sad, and it's been sort of "bugging" me, for lack of a better word. At first, I thought he was just talking to himself, saying he should be happy to have achieved his goal.
Then, I noticed that he HAD been standing, and kneeled down to sing that line to Penny, as though he believed his newfound power could convince her to… just get up and be happy with him/sing his praises. Notice how the word "arise" was so forceful/commanding? And how his face/voice softened on the word "sing", after he would have realized that Penny was NOT going to arise, nor would she sing.
Also, is it because everyone believed DH killed Penny that he got into the ELE? Did they think that too? (Technically, her death was an accident… not blatant murder). Would they revoke his membership if they found out? How sad was Billy's face when the reporter asked why he had killed her? Will I ever stop asking questions? xD
How did I not see that ending coming? I mean… they outright told us "There's no happy ending, so they say. Not for me anyway". When Penny stood up after seeing "Billy Buddy", I expected her to start singing, and end this madness. I even expected another duet. =/ *shakes head at self*
