Has anyone noticed that in the background singers during the final song never finish their sentence? I mean, we all expect them to say "wanted" but it could be so many different things.

Everything you ever feared.

Everything you ever lost.

Everything you ever loved.

I think there has to be something to that.

There's so much to that song. Like, what if the song isn't being sung to "everyone" but to Billy. Dr. Horrible has made his transition to head honcho in Billy's life. He's taken over and Billy has no more control. What is your opinion. Here are the lyrics:

Here lies everything

The world I wanted at my feet

My victory's complete

So hail to the king

[Everything you ever]

Arise and see

So your world is benign

So you think justice has a voice

We all have a choice

Now your world is mine

[Everything you ever]

And I am fine

Now the nightmare's real

Now Dr. Horrible is here

To make you quake with fear

To make the whole world kneel

[Everything you Ever]

And I won't feel

A thing

If you ever expect Joss not to infuse his work with duality and ambiguiety, you've got the wrong Whedon.

I think you've got a good insight.  Having that bit of the chourus unfinished, leaves the listener's ear free to add, well, everything – which is what Penny was for him/or what he realizes she was.

The first two lines of the song get to me every time, singing them over Penny.

Peace through Truth & Justice

It's also an echo of the lyrics from "Slipping":

Then I win, then I get
Everything I ever –
All the cash, all the fame
And social change

I completly agree with you TheaterGeek1988. I think both "slipping" and "everything you ever" are songs that are sung to Billy and not everyone else. "Slipping" always struck me as Horrible singing it to Billy (I have more explanation in the forum on Act 3, meaning to the ending). I think this is my favourite song in the whole musical just because there is so much in it.  The middle lines where he's supposed to be singing to Penny (So your world's benign" to "I am fine") are so haunting. What choice do we have? What was Billy's choice and where did it get him in the end? And what world is left for him to have? Is it really the one he wanted to begin with? I love the ambiguity to this song.

I love this song and I noticed that it mirrored "Slipping" I also agree it could mean anything by them not finishing. Here is my parody just to make a point so no yelling it's just a parody of it. Well with what the everything could be I mean.

Here lies everything

The world I wanted at my feet

My victory's complete

So hail to the king

[Everything you ever thought]

Arise and see

So your world is benign

So you think justice has a voice

We all have a choice

Now your world is mine

[Everything you ever saught]

And I am fine

Now the nightmare's real

Now Dr. Horrible is here

To make you quake with fear

To make the whole world kneel

[Everything you Ever fought]

And I won't feel

A thing

I am The Green Dragon I leave no trail behind. I go about my evil deeds without stressing my mind. No one has ever caught up to me as they say. Then again people fear me more and more each day.

"Everything you ever…" is cut off at the end to express how Billy is choking up with the grief of Penny's death…he can't finish the sentence because of the pain he feels.

It can also be a statement to sum up all that he's always ever desired in his life. The female voice (Maurissa Tancharoen) almost sounds like an angel (or angels with the echo effect) reminding Billy that any true happiness he wanted out of life has just gone out the window with Penny's death. He's officially in the ELoE, but it's not everything he's ever…

Penny woluld have completed that, he feels.

That's a good way of looking at it.  However I still love the song no matter what Joss and Co have created a new drug.

I think of the chorus as "muses". They're the little voice inside Horrible telling him to seek power. The unfinished part of "Everything you ever" has always seemed to me to be a trailing thought. He wanted so much — all the cash, all the fame (and social change) — that it couldn't be expressed in words.

So the muses simply offered "everything he ever"; a lure that few can resist. All it cost him was, well, everything he ever….
