With all the talk about the ending I wanted to bring up a little detail at the begining of Act III during “So They Say”.

At 1:40 in we see Penny in the laundromat sitting in front of 2 Frozen Yogurts (one unopened) and she looks a little down…

Then just 6 seconds later the door opens and she turns quickly…

To me it looks like she got Billy a frozen yogurt and she is waiting for him to talk to.  So if Billy had shown up instead of plotting against Capt. Hammer would have they have finally made their connection?

Maybe I am digging too hard and I am one who thought the ending was perfect but was this another missed opportunity for Billy?  Anyone else notice this?

I totally agree, the split screen shot during that number suggests just that. Also they are singing:

DR HORRIBLE and PENNY
There’s no happy ending,
so they say.

DR HORRIBLE
Not for me anyway.

PENNY
Should I stop pretending

DR HORRIBLE
Stop pretending,
take a chance to build a brand new day.

PENNY
Or is this a brand new day?

The ambiguiety of what they should “stop pretending” is quite marked.

Yes, I noticed it too, and I agree that the 2 frozen yogurts aren’t just a “crazy random happenstance” :D

I think it is clear that it was a missed opportunity. Penny convinced herself to fall for Captain Hammer for awhile, even though some of her first instincts go against it (”I wonder what you’re captain of?” and telling Billy she thought he was cheesy)…she projects her hopes on Hammer in “On the Rise,” but when she actually starts looking at him her gut tells her that something isn’t right.

As I’ve said elsewhere, “The Perfect Story (So They Say)” is primarily a song about misinformation and lies. Penny is trying to convince herself that what “they say” about her relationship with Captain Hammer being the perfect story is true–she says something like “I guess he’s okay” in a dubious voice about Capt. Hammer while hoping that Billy will show up to eat a treat with her.

Captain Hammer isn't EVEN like pie! No layers, just cheese.

Poor Penny was fooled until the end when he say some inappropriate things about her. But she still believes in him. So sad.

But he IS like pie. Every character Joss has ever created is like pie. Listen to the words of “Everyone’s a Hero”, yes he’s a jerk, yes he’s a bully, yes he sleeps around and clearly is not discrete, but he is the “Hero” remember. Anyway, his dry-cleaning bill
was for 4 sweater vests, dude wears tank-tops. Maybe he has a secret identity as a librarian?

Something else, someone pointed out to me that's kinda crazy. In Act 2, Penny is wearing this yellow skirt, with blue shirt and red belt. She looks super like Snow White. And in Act 1, the original blogger email asking about Penny was username “Dead, not sleeping.” And then she did die, with resolved the groupie's “problem with her.” Interesting insert of fairy tale in there I thought.

Another little detail worthy of note in the beginning of “Perfect Story” with the reporters, Marti sings “Let's all be our best” and the other reporter sings “Next up..Who's gay?”  Maybe i'm just digging her but I'm thinking that's a dig at Perez Hilton's outing of Neil Patrick Harris.

Joss doesn't often bring real life into his works but on very rare occasions he'll get a dig in. For instance in Buffy “Dawn's in trouble again. Must be Thursday.” as the show aired on Thursday night.
