I was very surprised when the Dr. Horrible soundtrack was released that there was no lossless version. The one redeeming factor of iTunes releases is when it's available in ALAC so that you can do whatever you want with it. The reason many people turn to piracy or just buy a CD instead is because music downloading services provide lossy files (often times with DRM, but not always).
Some services at least provide common formats with good encoding schemes (-v0 or -v2 MP3s), but what's really needed is what bands like They Might Be Giants are doing: releasing albums in FLAC for purchase, so that when you buy online you get exactly what you get at a store. I want to be able to convert what I've bought to whatever I want without losing quality, which I will with iTunes 224CBR AAC files.
Lossy to lossy transcoding is a big no-no in my world, and I was delighted when I found out the official soundtrack was coming so I could ditch my unofficial rip I made from the Hulu FLVs. Anyway, I have no idea if any of the Dr. Horrible staff read this forum or not, but if they do: please provide the soundtrack in ALAC on iTunes. I'd like to buy it.
