I knew, as soon as I saw the 'nearly kiss' between Dr. Horrible and Penny in the laundromat, how this was all going to play out.
I kept thinking "Joss is Going to kill off Penny! Joss is Going to kill off Penny! Joss is Going to kill off Penny! He won't really kill off Penny, will he? Oh, Look. He's killed off Penny!"
So, it didn't come as that much of a surprise. Joss has adopted the same kind of twists in Buffy/Angel/Serenity. Its great to add some kind of shock value, but when you're expecting it because he's done it countless times before, you're left feeling less shocked, and more disappointed by the tired conclusion.
It's a shame, Acts I and II were great, but someone should tell Joss that his surprise, out of the blue, death twists aren't original or shocking anymore.

We didn't see it coming at all… my wife and I both thought Penny was secretly working for the ELE, watching Dr. Horrible's progress… it explained why she was at the heist site, and we thought she was seducing Captain Hammer as well…
But instead? Her last words, "Captain Hammer will save us"… wow.

I must admit, I didn't consider for a second that Penny was in the ELE. Penny, to me, was the epitome of good. They couldn't ever be together, because she is everything he isn't.
From what I've read, the general consensus is that Dr. Horrible isn't evil and probably just missunderstood – Well, no, Moist mentions that he's put in enough hours to become a henchman and he must have done some bad things to be considered to be accepted into the ELE. Also, by the end of ACT II, he was prepared to cross a line, to Kill. How could Penny be with someone like that? She couldn't.
Up until the point where the 'Almost Kiss' happened, I had thought they could play this off as a one sided thing with Dr. Horrible just pining after Penny. After that, it was inevitable the only conclusion was that someone would die.
I really wish I could spend 5 minutes with Joss and find out his thinking, why he loves to use the shock death card. I know death is part of life, but I think he's played this one just too many times.

Actually the twist I expected is Dr. Horrible becoming good; and Captain Hammer joining the ELE.
I agree with the OP tho; Act 1 and 2 were so good; but 3 was extremely disappointing (I didn't see it coming; but as I posted in another thread: I went in to see a mel brooks movie; and 90% of it was mel brooks – except the ending; which turned out to be Friday the 13th.
I'm extremely disappointed and sorry I recommended it to my friends

Personally, from the genereral vibes, I very much expected this to play out like one of those Silver Age Jimmy Olsen comics, where the twist at the end makes everything revert to status quo. You know what I´m talking about.
I think it was a brave move to go in the direct opposite direction with act three.
There I was, switching on my computer and expecting "more of the same" – and got utterly blown away.
What´s not to like about that?

But the status quo isn't quo

Except, Joss has done it so many times before that, to me, what happaned was EXACTLY what I thought was going to happen.
Anyway, I'll still buy the DVD. Curse you Whedon.
ALSO, I would like to go on the record that if Dollhouse isn't cancelled after 6 episodes (Which, it being on FOX, is a possibility) – I bet you he pulls this trick again.

See, I thought that just for once, he would take it in a different direction. I knew he was going to go in the "Billy was going to lose it all" direction, but I didn't think it would go like that. I thought he'd kill Captain Hammer, Penny would be completely disgusted and never want to see him again, and then the Evil League would completely reject him because they felt he killed for altruistic reasons. Billy not only loses Penny, but he loses the Dr. Horrible as well and is left as just a loser, for lack of a better word.
On a side note though, I thought "Everyone's a Hero" was possibly the best song of all of them, just because of the "Yeah, we totally had sex" line he just drops in out of nowhere.

I knew it was going to happen, but the impact wasn't lessened one bit.
This was the final nail into the coffin. I have to claim that I am now a fan of these people. I was intrigued by Serenity, impressed by Firefly (not so much with the others such as HIMYM and I've just been introduced to The Guild, but Alien Ressurection gave me a grin though everyone else I knew just rolled their eyes at it).

We should learn a lesson, especially after Wash, but we never do. Don't fall in love with a Whedon character. Or a Whedon plot line.

Yep, saw it coming.
Doesn't retract form the fact that I thought it was very good and thought it ended well.
But I think the only Joss Whedon thing I've read/watched where he doesn't play the shock death card was Runaways. And so I'm thinking he had to promise not to kill anyone (if he had killed someone and he killed Xavin I would now be hunting Joss down and hurting him).
But nice end for the character of Dr Horrible. Love the new threads.

Nope. I did NOT see it coming. I probably should have, I can see how you did, but I didn't think for a moment that it was going to end that way. For starters, surely it was too short to wield that kind of powerful pain – but it did.
And that's not a trite gimmick at all. To so thoroughly care about these characters in such a short time is something of a little masterpiece. Joss has proven his ability to weave all conceivable emotions into a tiny, musical tale.

I SO saw this coming. I knew when I started watching it someone was gonna get killed. I wasn't sure if it was gonna be Dr. Horrible or Penny, but for some reason I knew it wasn't gonna be Capt. Hammer.
Regardless of the knowing, I still loved the show 100%. The only thing I have to complain about is that it isn't on DVD and the soundtrack isn't out yet. I think everything with the name Whedon attached to it is awesome and I can find no fault in him killing people at random. Its actually one of the things I love about his work most. People actually die. The shows are crazy and in no way are they real, but they still deal with real things that everyone has to go through. I can't help but love that.
