All I've read on the message board are positive reviews. Now, I love nearly everything Joss has done in the past (didn't care for the graphic novels), have seen all of the series shows over and over and over, BUT WHAT IS THIS ? I don't get why NP Harris was chosen for this role and I don't get the role or the whole blog for that matter. He's not a romantic leading man. Now, Nathan, him I can see over and over again. He's funny doing absolutely nothing and he is so good looking he could advertise trash bags and I'd watch. But, really, Mr. Whedon, I just don't get this mess.

Yup, you're missing something – I'm not that familiar with NPH, saw one ep of HIMYM and saw Dougie when I was a kid, but I thought he was perfect for the role. I was very impressed.

He's allowed to express an opinion. I also think he was talking more about NPH than he was the whole production.

The point of him is the underdog guy trying to change things he thinks is wrong, he is not supposed to be the charismatic, good looking lead guy, thats not his job. He is supposed to be the misguided lead that wants to show everyone (including Penny) that he is not just a nobody. The whole 'evil' thing is really just a label. He is more sincere and has a good heart that is clouded by how he sees the world as full of lies and deceit. The hero character is the true villian, really only interested in himself and his own needs, he just happens to save people on occasion, mostly as a side effect of showing off. The hero is shown to be what society is at most times, a thin veneer mostly comprised of self interest and vainity.

Actually, I thought NPH was a wonderful choice for the role. I think he is charismatic without being a total golden boy. Nathan was great even though his character was imminently unlikeable, but NPH's portrayal of Dr. Horrible tugged at all the right heartstrings.
I didn't see a mess, but everything that Joss writes seems to strike a particular chord with me and I'm drawn to it again and again…..

Given the little I knew before the show, I figured a grown-up Doogie was appropriate.
However, Billy/Dr. H. is obviously not a grown-up Doogie, but Mr. Harris did the job so well that I'll never make the mistake of thinking of him as a grown-up Doogie ever again.
I just realized that, ever since act I, I stopped thinking "Dr. Howser, Dr. Horrible", but before that I had made just such a connection. I can't think of this guy as Dr. Howser now. (That was a little kid.) I can think of him as Dr. H, but I can see so much potential for other things now.
It's amazing how things can change with just one event.

If we're going to express these kinds of opinions, I'd respectfully disagree (altho, to be fair, NF got less to act with than the other leads, notwithstanding all his song solos); personally, I thought Caleb was an uninteresting villain and that's the season I stopped watching Buffy regularly. I never saw Firefly and thought Serenity was mostly OK but he's not even the best thing in it.
If you read the DH interviews Whedon's done, he'd seen Assassins 2004 revival and that's what made him want to eventually work with NPH. Dislike him as an actor, if you wish, but I've no idea how you can realistically believe his singing (especially the ACT II "duet") with Felicia Day isn't part of what makes DH work so incredibly well.
