Just whipped this up using some LEGO Cad tools…

Bigger image

I will work on the Evil Dr. next although it will take a bit more creativity on my part as I will have to do the artwork to get it into CAD form and that just isn't my thing.  I will also see if I can come up with a generic Penny.

Not sure why the image didn't work in the previous post but here is the Good (Evil?) Doctor…

This one was much more difficult as I had to do a lot of work on the emblem.  Not perfect but the best I can do.

Heres a link in case the image doesn't display again.

Those are so COOL! How did you do that!!?? Especially the hammer logo on Capt Hammer. Looks like it came straight from the toy factory.

Thanks,

LEGO is my hobby of choice.  There are a lot of free CAD tools for LEGO which take some time to get used to but are quite powerfull.  Capt. Hammer was actually easy, I just took the image from Jinx and used a tool that takes an image and converts them to "stickers" in CAD form.  Then you just use the CAD tool to place the parts and there you go.

Dr. Horrible was a bit more difficult.  I hand drew the buttons and the outline of the pocket.  For the embroidery I took one of the screen captures of the Dr. and ran it through the "sticker" tool although I had to "flatten" the image a fair bit.  Because the image is so small that didn't really matter.

After all the work in CAD I run the results through POVray (A ray tracing tool) which generates the high quality final image.

Probably more info than you cared to know but that is how I did it.  Basically any nice flat image that is in Bitmap form I can place into the CAD tool as a Sticker.

NO! Not too much info at all. Im really interested in this now. Something new to add to my list to check out. It probably be against lots of rules but still I wonder if you could make these and sell these to fans. Im sure that's been sus'd out already by the lego community tho…

Sorry for the delay, I was on vacation.

I can say that many folks have made custom LEGO Figures and some have even included trademark logo's.  A few have even sold a few of these figures on a very limited basis.  By that I mean less than 10 at a time and mostly in special one off sales.  In such quantities they do not draw notice and often times there just isn't a huge market.

With that said I have experience getting custom LEGO Scale decales printed.  This would make doing Captain hammer as I have him in the image quite easy to do.  Dr. Horrible would be more difficult but still possible.  The issue is sourcing all the parts.  This can be done but when it is all said and done I would guess that a Capt. Hammer would cost at least $8 which is getting pretty expensive for a LEGO fig.

Honestly I would love to try and put these together and sell them but I really wouldn't want to do that on a large scale without some official permission.  LEGO isn't an issue as once I buy the parts I can do whatever I want to them but the issue is selling something with the trademarks of Dr. Horrible.  I would need the premission from someone with the rights to grant permission to do this to give that permission.  Even then I would need to be confident that I could sell a minimum of 200 of any figure I were to create.

I would never be able to make much money doing this sort of thing but it could be fun.  I am just not convinced that there is a large market for such a thing and if there was if I would have the right to pursue it.

Those images are adorable!

I found your explanation of how you created them to be interesting. (even though I don't have the spare time to try it out myself just now)

Great work, looking forward to seeing Penny. :)

Wow I must say those are really good I wish I was half as good at things like that.  My only artistic ability is writing and that pretty much sums it up.

I am The Green Dragon I leave no trail behind. I go about my evil deeds without stressing my mind. No one has ever caught up to me as they say. Then again people fear me more and more each day.
