What kind of lab coat IS that? It's not a Howie-Style, and I can't for the life of my figure out what style it is? Any ideas?

Try original 1930′s "Mad Scientist" ala Dr. Victor Frankenstein. It was all the rage back then .

When you find out, PLEASE let me know! I'm working on a Dr. Horrible costume, but am missing the coat, so I only have a pair of goggles at the moment.
Not much of a costume. HELP!

Well, I've now decided to TRY (and I do emphasize this word) breaking out the sewing machine and seeing what I can come up with. Should it be a success, I shall let you know. I just wish I could use my freeze ray to stop time, then I'd be able to make it right now. Sadly, I'm out of wonderflonium.
I'll be making a white one first, and depending on how it looks, I shall create the red one, too! Anyone got any ideas what to use for the gloves and boots?

Are you going to be doing the pattern yourself or have you found any luck finding a pattern to modify? I think the red one would be cool and more wearable.

We've got an LJ community up and running for costuming if anyone here wants to join. Also, we did manage to track down the right gloves, we think.

It looks a little bit like a straitjacket, haha. Yeah, but it's not a very common lab coat, he do look mad in it

I definitely need the coat – I just bought all the other pieces of the outfit (goggles, gloves, boots) so now I just need to find a proper coat.

The same coat was used on Firefly in the Ariel episode. I suspect it was custom made for the show. If anyone knows how to contact Shawna Trpcic we could ask her about it.

This one is pretty good.

Not exact, but it's the closest I've seen so far.

I think it's a Mandarin collar. You could probably modify a chef's jacket with relative ease, it's a close match.

The coat is driving me nuts. I think everything else has been taken care of with exact or really close matches but so far nothing comes close to the coat. I have searched and searched and found nothing I would consider close. From what I can tell it is a heavier fabric, possibly demin. It has the four shoulder buttons along with some sort of belt that is not visible from the front. There are also no buttons visible on the side so they must be covered with a flap of fabric.
This was a limited budget production and all the other parts of the costume seem to be off the shelf and not terribly expensive with little to no modification. So unless some member of the cast or crew had this in their closet or custom made it (the embrodery makes me think it wasn't custom made) I would think this should be available somewhere. Besides there must have been a couple copies so they could die one red.
Of course I look nothing like NPH and would probably make a better Capt. Hammer but other than the gloves that costume is fairly simple and inexpensive and it would be cool to have both available.
I guess I am just hopeing someone will have better luck than I have with the coat. I seem to be possessed but Dr. Horrible…

Searching for "Howie" may help as that's a simliar style that's used…
Someone did report that this is basically the same coat that was worn by the doctors in the Firefly episode Ariel

Perhaps it is a Frock, rather than a coat? I'm searching for lab / medical frocks right now and turning up decent results. My dad's an ex-ER physician so I'll get him to help me in my search in the next couple of days – if I turn up anything I'll post it here.

Still no breakthroughs on the coat but in searching through countless medical catalogs the closest I have come up with is an "isolation gown" or coat sometimes listed as a simply a protective gown.
Of course these all seem to be very light weight and disposable so they wouldn't work for the costume but the style is closer than anything else I have seen. Below are some sample images of what I have found…

I found the sad and horrible truth on another thread. Apparently the coats were recycled from another project that employed the same staff (including costume designer and director) called Firefly (forgive me I'd never heard of Whedon or any of hi projects until Doctor Horrible). There were pictures and everything. It was terrible. So it looks like this is going to be a custom job. If anyone out there is good with a needle and thread and wants to post a pattern and an idea of what it will look like, it would totally make my day.

I know a dressmaker, I can see I'm going to have to get her to make some of these!
It's a good thing that you've never heard of Firefly – because it means you've got something to look forward to – more importantly, it means this is reaching a wider audience which is excellent.
Check out Firefly though, if you liked this, you'll probably enjoy it (though there's no singing in Firefly LOL)
