Depending on what the plastic is made from they should work.

Does anyone have experience spray painting the goggles? I used a Krylon plastic paint and its still kind of tacky an hour later even though the masked surfaces are dry.
Do I just need to be more pacient with the curing process or do I need to apply some kind of sealant?

Unfortunately, the thing that makes the goggles flexible, is also the same thing that prevents paint from curing completely. You will always have tacky paint if you used out of the can spray paint stuff.
I used acrylic enamels on mine, sprayed through an airbrush. No tacky paint here.

Good to know. As a last ditch effort I painted a clear coat of Liquitex glossy varnish over the whole thing and it is drying quite nicely. May not stand up to a hardcore scratch test but will be good enough for my uses meaning I am not going to gets bits of fluff stuck to my goggles.
The spray paint I used has a hammered metal finish which looks kind of cool when all said and done because the goggles appear mottled.

Um.. here goes.
1) Got 2 pairs of those "VG800-H5″ welding goggles
2) Removed all the plastic bits and strap, they should just slide out
3) Measure out and cut the two holes in the sides for extra vents… taken from 2nd pair of goggles. Used Xacto knife for this, worked like a charm. Make sure the holes are cut right before moving on!
4) Acquired can of Krylon FUSION – For Plastic in silver.. picked it up at walmart for $5 (724504025320)
5) Hung goggles on a hook attached to tree outside, gave googles a good complete coat
6) -Insert about 4 hours of filler here… nap, videogame session, whathave you-
7) Replace all plastic bits and strap, paint should be pretty much dry. Is still tacky a day later, but shouldnt be an issue. Paint is dry
Enjoy.

I found these and they look VERY similar – but I don't have the eye for detail that some of you have. The problem with ordering them is that they have a $25 minimum order AND a $12 charge for shipping after that! BALLS!!!
I think I'm going to check a couple local stores, unless someone wants to split some cost. Since I'm not worried about mine until Holloween, I'd be willing to order and split the cost, but of course, I would ship them to you via mail, which is probably less than $5.
Let me know if you're interested – I'm not ordering for another week, and then only if I can't find them locally.

I created an online petition and will send it to Fibre-Metal, hopefully they will do a limited run production of their old style of goggles for us. I know, not likely, but hey you never know….

Let's see how many people we can get to sign it!

I ordered goggles from here http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=35711 , shipping took about 4 days and you get a 2nd pair of non flip-up goggles and you can pop out 2 of the vents to add to add to the other set. $4.29 plus shipping.

Here’s how I made the goggles for my Dr. Horrible costume, starting with the green Fibre-Metal VG800-H5 welding goggles.
- Removed lenses, vents, and elastic strap.
- Washed with soap and water.
- Roughed up the surface with a medium-grain sandpaper.
- Coated with Mod Podge. This firmed up the plastic and gave the paint a good surface to adhere to.
- Painted with several coats of acrylic paint. I used a mixture of Anita’s Silver Metallic Craft Paint and Plaid Folk Art Metallic Gunmetal Gray to get a nice aluminum color.
- Dry brushed on splotches of a rusty color, paying particular attention to corners. For this I used a mixture of dark copper, red brown, khaki, and little bit of white.
- Using a foam brush, I dry brushed on some more of the aluminum color to tone down some of the rust color, making it look more like a tarnish. I used broad strokes to avoid getting down into the corners.
- Filed down the edges of the lenses to make it easier to get them back in the frame.
- With the extra thickness added by the layers of Mod Podge and paint, the vents no longer fit onto the goggles. I had to trim off the lip of the vents leaving the stem, and then glue them in place with Mod Podge.

Thank you, net|split! I saw that URL, visited the local Harbor Freight Tools, and picked up a couple of cheap pairs of welding goggles. No shipping!

I just bought the base 'green' goggles from Harbor Freight for $3.00. They look exactly the same, save the color:

I'm going to hit up a local welding supply store in the morning and see if they have any better matches.
