So, I have decided that I am going o "attempt" to custom sew Dr. Horribles Coat. I have spent the last couple days studying Ariel screencaps, and Dr. H, trying to figure out how the thing is built, and I think I have it for the most part.

Just a general schematic of the coat…(Not to scale….at ALL!! lol )

What I think the pattern pieces should look like. I'm a little shaky on these, I've spent many-a-hour studying stills to try and figure this out, but it's had when the coat is white and you can't see seams. So if there are any more experienced sewers out there, and yolu think this is wrong, PLEASE let me know, I want this thing to be a lose to the real thing as possible.

Patterns Pg 2.
For the belt I'm pretty sure that it's sewn into the seams on either side of the back and it is sewn TO the back. With two buttons, one on each end.
Hopefully people can use these and add to them and we can get a realy good pattern/costume made that everyone can use! Anyway, back to work!

I started with Simplicity 5443. Doubled one of the front panels for the large piece; you may need a little extra for the neck attachment. Had to modify the collar, of course.
Not that hard, as projects go! If I can get sort of close, a half-decent tailor should do it in their sleep.

Oh…snap!!
I just took alook through the boxes of patterns we have laying around the house, and I found……5443!!! Wootness!
I thought I might have to wait to get it, but I can start right in now, sweet!
Anyway off to work!

@Dark Matter: In your sketches your are missing that the part from front overlaps with the part from the back. You can see that when Dr. Horrible puts on his red coat at the end.

No it's there, on the first sketch it's the dotted line on the front view. And it's on the second page of the patterns, it's the Fold-under piece.

As for the sleeves… here a fairly easy way to add length to sleeves…. from looking at the seams when Dr Horrible pulls on the gloves at the end of Act III, I am fairly certain this is the method they used.

What fabric do you all think Dr. Horrible's coat is made out of? I notice in the close-ups what appears to be vertical ribbing or some other sort of parallel vertical line pattern. Could it be corduroy?

After a couple trips to the local fabric store, I've found something, pretty close to perfect. White Denim!
It's not insanely expensive, and it looks really really close.

Because of the way the coat hangs, I think it is made from linen or a looser weave cotton, like madras (not broadcloth or quilting fabric). If you use a looser weave cotton though you will have to double the pieces because it is generally very thin.
