I've been wanting to do this ever since I heard this song, and I finally got around to recording it today. There are definitely some pacing/timing issues and issues all around – I still haven't figured out how to sing "and every day of rain brings water flowing to things growing in the ground" smoothly, but I'd love to get your feedback on it and improve!

Listen/download here: http://www.box.net/shared/7ab8ztb3t9

Thanks so much!
Prissi

(Disclaimer, justincase: Obviously I don't own the rights to this song, but seeing as how it's called a sing-along blog I take that literally to mean that Whedon, et. al. are responsive enough to fan work to not sue me. In any case, please please don't sue me, or I'll be forced to quit med school, become a supervillainess, and start a mail-order heart-attack business. >_>)

Aww, you have such a sweet, pretty voice, I love it!  <3  I only pressed the "play" button at first 'cause I wasn't sure if I'd like it or not, but I think I'll download now.  ^^  I really liked it.  Also, the "things growing in the ground part" doesn't sound at all bad like you think it does.  I thought you did an excellent job of progressing to the higher note, which is a skill I definitely lack (along with singing in general, of course).  xD

Even my henchmen think I'm crazy.

Prissi, you have a beautiful voice. Thanks for sharing with us!

The only real suggestion I have is that you play an A bass note under "growing" in verse one and "sowing" in verse 2, instead of an F. That way it leads nicely in a stairstep: C-A-F, instead of C-F-F which sounds like you arrived at the cadence early.

Keep the songs coming! Have you submitted this to Wonderflonium?

Schnappi: Awww, thank you so much. <3 Hehehehe, I have this thing with singing, though, I really believe that everyone can sing.

Moses: Well, thank you so much for listening! <3 I didn't even think about those notes. This we shall do the next time we get a chance. \o/

I was not aware of the existence of Wonderflonium! Perhaps I shall submit it there when I'm done… polishing? :x I'm also tempted to add strings. And while my korg has some pretty awesome drum samples, I unfortunately do not know the first thing about how to sequence them and etc. :x (It would also work wonders for my pacing, though.)

As for more… Penny doesn't really have any others, does she? >_> At least solo songs. I'd love to duet On the Rise with someone, or something, though.

Drums aren't too difficult, basically each different instrument is mapped to a key on your keyboard and you can usually find what's what in the manual. Take a look at my full score if you haven't already. The instruments are kick (bass drum) on the F4 space, cross-stick snare drum on the C5 space, Ride cymbal (with brushes) on the F5 line, and hi-hat on the G5 space (x is closed, o is open).

If you can record over yourself on your keyboard, it shouldn't be hard to add the strings and the drums in.

I have a Korg piano too, an SP-250. It only has piano samples and a few other instruments, but I like it. It doesn't have a record feature but I have it hooked up to my computer which can record.

Yeah, I have the capability to mix multiple recordings together on the computer… sucks that I don't have anything fancy for the mac and have to boot into windblows to use my beloved CEP (never got used to Garageband… argh) I actually went and bought a CD that sampled a Kawai concert grand piano for use with my Korg (it's a Triton Le88) because the existing piano samples really drove me nuts with their over-bell-like, way too keyboard-y sound. It's got a lot of stuff… that I never use… @_@

the problem with drums is that I really have no concept of which drum is appropriate to be used where. ;P maybe with the score I can do it though; I think I'll try that out. thanks so much. <3

EDIT: I just went looking for the full score with the drum line and I couldn't find it. :x http://moses.leifam.com/drhorrible.html this page, right?

Wow! That was absolutly incredible…not much I can really crit, that hasn't already been said..

Although if you do find yourself in need of a duet partner ;) , although I highly doubt I could compare to you, I'm somewhat of a…shall we say..average…singer… :P

Moses: thanks ;D I'm such an idiot. I hadn't realized "full score" was a link… my brain is addled since I just came off a week straight of living in the lab. we're talking 18+ hours straight most days. doing nothing but running Western blots.  Many times this week I considered quitting lab, then quitting med school, and going off to open my supervillainess mail-order heart attack supply company. ;P

Dark Matter: Well thank you! And please see my above comment to Schnappi. I believe everyone can sing. the point of music is to make people feel things, to convey emotion. ;) if you can do that, you're fine.

honestly, I'm a very very mediocre singer, nothing special. I have no training whatsoever, I can't belt (a point of soreness and much insecurity for me especially as I was growing up because I would love to do musical theatre but have no belt whatsoever… and even less spare time than belt, if that's even possible). my only saving grace is being able to convey emotion. >_> or so I think. that said, I would love to duet with you. pick a song!

Alrighty, yah I have no training or anything either, I can't belt and I do musical theater as well, (Suessical next year! Woot! Graduating year too!), but I havn't really had anything solo…

As for a song, "On the Rise" actually sounds pretty good. You'll have to make the music though cause I can't play anything, at all. ( A rather sour spot for me, cause I really really want to learn something! lol )

I think they have karaoke tracks of that, Moses has one and some other guy has another. Check out either

and see which one you want to use and we'll run with it!

I'm going to duet that with a friend of mine, too, but it'll probably take a while for him… he's getting married in a wee.. holy crap. yeah. o_o;

Hehe, well congrats to him!

And I think maybe the second one would be best…

I had to take a second to figure out the timing on that one, but then I realized that there was no intro on it, and then everything lined up, lol.

So yah, how did you want to work this?? Recording wise?

are you familiar with recording this sort of thing? I'd want you to record just your parts with no background noise, no pops/clicks/puffs, etc. with the karaoke in headphones. and then just send those to me. I'll take care of the rest. ;)

Actually if you wouldn't mind, I would LOVE an intro!! It's weird jumping immediatly into the singing.

If it's not to much trouble of course…

Hey there. My track has an intro on it. The other track, the one without an intro, is jtauber's– I can't help you on that, but you might be able to get in touch with him. On the other hand, if there's anything I can tune on my track to help you be able to sing to it, I'm happy to help (and am probably easier to reach than jtauber). You can download both the track with vocal lines and track without vocal lines at the page Prissi linked above.

Oh right sorry, I got mixed up as to whos was whos. But if you could have some sort of cue as to when to start singing, that'd be great, cause right now it all sounds the same at the beginning and I have no idea when to start the singing…
