I was thinking briefly about how well DHSAB characters could be converted into classic comic book format, and what archetypes the characters would fall into. I was also thinking about how I would specifically classify Dr. Horrible.
I truly don't think that the current archetypes work. Captain Hammer isn't much of a Hero, nor is he an Anti-Hero. Dr. Horrible is both a Villain and an Anti-Villain, as well as Anti-Hero.
Aspects of Dr. Horrible (pre-Act 3) that are villainous:
- Wants to rule the world
- Willing to commit crimes (short of murder) to reach goals
- Wants to topple society
Aspects of Dr. Horrible (again, pre-Act 3) that are Anti-Villain:
- Wants to better the world
- Is adverse to violence
- Cares for the well-being of complete strangers/children
Aspects of Dr. Horrible that are Anti-Hero:
- Willing to break laws in order to better the world
- Has an (semi-)admirable goal
- Is motivated by goals that seem selfish, but ultimately beneficial
A lot of the examples I could give for the 3 aspects of Dr. Horrible would overlap, and really depends on how you veiw it. Still I think that Dr. Horrible's character is complex to varying degress. He's probably someting all together different than any of those three.
How would you classify Dr. Horrible, within standard comic book conventions? Captain Hammer? How well could Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog be converted into a comic book? What changes might be needed? What would you change?
