I found this short musical to be a Whedon twist on the high school jock vs. geek story. Instead of seeing the hero Captain Hammer as the righteous do-gooder he pictures him as the genetically gifted arrogant bully who makes tormenting others his pasttime but is celebrated for his gift (in this case super heroics, in the case of high school: sports) by those around him.

Dr. Horrible is then our emo geek, who both envies and despises the jock for getting everything he wants. Even the end of the story supports this by showing us that though Horrible has the last laugh with Captain Hammer, and like many a computer geek/nerd goes on to be far more successful, he still does not get what he truly wanted because he was pursuing it for the wrong reasons.

I thought that aspect of it was keen.
