In an interesting article about Hollywood’s transmedia gurus, David Kushner has the following to say about Joss and Doctor Horrible:
"Whedon is now experimenting with properties that originate online as short video series or Web serials. Part of the incentive is the creative freedom and low production costs. At the moment, he is creating a three-part, 30-minute serial about a hapless villain, called "Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog," which he plans to make available for free online. If that show gets picked up in another medium, Whedon will own a greater stake than if the show originated on network television. "

Whats wrong with that if he has done the work for it then he should take the credit for it . And i mean all the credit , if it gets picked up then fine good on him , but the chances of something like this being a big hit , i think it would be a nightmare to do !!!!!! Anyway after the writers strike , i would of thought we would welcome ventures like this ????????

I think you're dead right – the rest of the article is about how the landscape is changing and that TV is it's current form is not going to continue. Joss and others have caught onto the fact that the Internet has enormous potential in terms of delivering content while allowing users and fans to interact with content producers and each other.
It is the future and Doctor Horrible will be viewed as one of the important first steps. Exciting times, people!

I don't think anything is wrong with it.
I think maybe fear of trying something new is all that's stopping more people doing something like this – once this has proved to be successful I expect we'll see more people following in Joss' footsteps.

It will be interesting to see how it all pans out. Joss is pioneering the new technology here. Record companies ignored the internet for too long, to their detriment – only finally came to a head with Napster, and now they are embracing the new technology via iTunes etc and making a fortune in royalties without having to create physical product for sale.
It will be very interesting to see whether there is any kind of reaction from the major film/tv production studios post Doctor Horrible release. The way I see it, Joss is stealing a march on the competition. I wonder if he's coming up with plans for a new direction for Mutant Enemy?

Bud: You never know what's going to happen next!
I think Joss enjoys being the boss and if he could get his work done without having to get financing and submit control he would. Felicia Day is doing it with 'The Guild' and that is going really well – she is writing Season 2 now – and the medium is proving itself to be viable.
I'm sure this is the beginning of a brave new world, but how it will all finish I have no idea. Exciting, though!

Producing anything requires money, especially when computers are involved and serving video to the internet doesn't come cheap either, how does one recoup that expense, product placement only goes so far, have Mr. Hammer eat spam from the can.
Itunes is certainly viable but I'm not giving steve&co any more of my money. Getting 40 to 50 million viewers that the internet can easily provide creates buzz and I applaud them for trying something different in this blackhole of a tv summer. I'm sure others are taking note, dont forget its all about selling washing machines, er entertaining people thats it, thats the ticket…

If this is going to work as a business model they are going to have to leverage more existing tech. I would suggest releasing a low res (as in youtube quality) copy on bittorrent, and having higher res versions on itunes, and serving them through hulu, both of which are income streams. Trying to build a vid-serve infrastructure for one project is simply not practicle.
