July 15th, 2008 at 3:15 pmto Craig:
July 15th, 2008 at 3:37 pmDo you see any other revenue stream for anyone that was part of the film? Do you see any advertising or product placement other than the iPhone? Do you really think Apple would give them a dime for that? This isn’t primetime with millions of viewers sitting through advertisements for cars, drugs, phones, and food. Show a little respect, pony up a couple lousy dollars and support the work. It’s Joss Whedon doing the production with an actual cast. This isn’t a backyard project with friends. Even the Hulu stream had no ads!
Some more examples of “FREE” media with the option to BUY something to support the work:

Ok I don’t want to go off on a tangent but…
Craig: what you are saying is 1) Rude and 2) not accurate. “Free” TV (ex. broadcast stations such as WB and Fox) is supported by ads. From what I understand Dr. Horrible has none. On top of that ad purchasers aren’t really behind the whole “Internet video” thing despite being able to better track how many people are watching your ad; basically people aren’t buying into it because it’s too new. To sum up it’s very hard to make money from internet video in the traditional way.
This is a work that in all likelihood would have been expensive to make if Joss hadn’t called in so many favors. On top of that it has very high quality talent attached to it. These people should be paid. Finally this is really no different from a TV show that goes off the air and the only way to see the show is buy the DVDs.
Mr. O: I don’t think free media would work in this case, I think Joss’s business plan for this particular work is very sound.
